This monument has a square platform with the name Sharp inscribed on it. The obelisk once
stood on this base. When it was mounted, it was a prominent monument in the cemetery.
Nearby there is a grave marker for their daughter

One other nearby grave marker has toppled face down.
It may also have been for a member of the Sharp family.

A family Bible record also claims that William and Charlotte were married on 16 September 1900 at Love's Chapel.<a href="#3" name="top3"><b>3</b></a>

This property was originally purchased by Charles from his mother on 22 November 1888.<a href="#2" name="top2"><b>2</b></a> The sale of Carrsville lot 45 occurred a little over five months later. The grantors for this deed include both Charles and his wife Willie: "We C.B. Sharp and Willie F. Sharp (wife of C.B. Sharp)." Charles's wife had to be named because she needed to relinquish her right of dower, as stated: "I together with Willie F. Sharp my wife aforesaid who relinquishes all her right of dower and homestead in said lands." This provides another instance where Charles names his earlier wife. This transaction is between a son (C. B. Sharp) and his mother (Delila Sharp).<a href="#2" name="top2"><b>2</b></a>
It is the second of a pair of transactions recorded on the same dates (22-23 November 1888).
The first transaction (in a separate <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2015/11/delila-sharp-property-sale-to-c-b-sharp.html">blog post</a>)
transfers property from Delila Sharp and to C. B. Sharp (also for $300).
The net effect of the two transactions is a property swap.

<div class="ao_post_just">
This deed reveals that C. B. Sharp is married. The phrase "We C. B. Sharp and William F. Sharp his wife" says this and
also the statement "Wm. F. Sharp who relinquishes all her right of dower & homestead in said land" reinforces it.
In common law states, when a married man sold land, the deed would have a clause where his wife would relinquish her
dower<a href="#3" name="top3"><b>3</b></a> interest in the property. This would protect the new owner from having a widow attempt to claim
her dower right in the property, in case the seller (her husband) died.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
The metes and bounds property description in this deed, "Beginning on a white oak and sassafras corner ..." is the same as the property
description of the farm in William C. Sharp's 1869 deed.<a href="#4" name="top4"><b>4</b></a> No other Livingston County deeds have been
found between 1869 and 1888, with C. B. Sharp as grantee. This suggests that C. B. Sharp acquired this property when his father's estate was
settled. Probate records may exist which support this.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
At the time this deed was signed, the original 260-acre farm had been split into two parts:
the 200-acre parcel which is being transferred by this deed and a 60-acre parcel which was owned by W. P. and Ida B. Washer.
This division reflects the wishes of William C. Sharp in his 1884 will: "5th I desire that my daughter Ida B. (now Ida B. Washer
wife of W.P. Washer) have and receive for her portion of my estate, Three land notes held by me against her husband
for about One hundred Dollars each amounting in the aggregate to about three hundred dollars."<a href="#5" name="top5"><b>5</b></a>

The contemporary information in the article regards the death of Charles Bruce Sharp, on the previous Monday, 18 November 1935.
A few weeks before his death, Charles’s declining health had stopped him from making his regular office attendance.
Aged 81 and the oldest member of the Taney County bar, he had missed only one day in his 44 years at the court.
Funeral services were organized by Dr. John Crockett at the Sharp residence on Tuesday (19 November 1935) and Charles was buried at Snapp Cemetery.
He was survived by his wife Bertie Sharp and "he had no other relatives in Taney County."

The biographical details regarding Charles's birth place and birth date, as well as his parent's names and origins are secondhand information.

The date and place where Charles was "admitted to the practice of law" was reported to be 7 July 1873 in Livingston County, Kentucky.
Since the date is specific, it suggests Charles may have had a diploma hanging in his office or perhaps it was entered into Taney County
records when he began to practice law in Forsyth. Based upon a 6 March 1854 birth date, he would have been only 19 years old in 1873.

Mrs. Sybil Parrish (also residing in Forsyth, Mo.) supplied the death certificate's personal information about Bertie:
<ul>
<li>Place of death: Lakeview Rest Home, Ozark Beach Com., Taney County, Missouri</li>
<li>Marital Status: widowed</li>
<li>Wife of: deceased</li>
<li>Birth date: 16 August 1873</li>

<li>Occupation: housekeeper</li>
<li>Birthplace: Benton County, Mo.</li>
<li>Father's name: Stokes Gregory</li>
<li>Mother's maiden name: Frances Gregory</li>

Sybil supplies detailed but probably secondhand information about Bertie. This suggests
Sybil was either a relative or a long-time friend of Bertie. It appears that the maiden
name of Bertie’s mother was unknown, since the Gregory surname is used.

In all four censuses they used the same names, and
their household characteristics were unique: lawyer, no children, and a 20 year age difference between spouses.

<div class="ao_post_just">
Despite the evidence that this was the same family in each of the four censuses, there was variation in the data
reported. For example, in 1900, Charles's birthplace was given as Kentucky and not Mississippi.
Also, in 1900, Bertie's age was increased by 10 years, so instead of reporting a birth year of 1873, 1863 was reported.
It is also known from other sources that their marriage took place on 2 May 1895,<a href="#6" name="top6">[6]</a>

This piece of evidence confirms Ida's residence in Carrsville in 1917.

The information in the two sources almost matches, except for two items.
Perhaps understandably, Albert was unable to supply the birthplaces for Ida's parents.
He probably didn't have that information yet. The other discrepancy is the birthplace
for Albert's father, given as Germany in the marriage bond and Pennsylvania in
the 1900 U.S. census<a href="#3" name="top3">[3]</a>. Although the marriage
bond and 1900 U.S. census agree on Albert's birthplace as being Kentucky,
the 1910 U.S. census<a href="#4" name="top4">[4]</a> and later records,
report his birthplace as Germany.

Albert completed the marriage bond application on 6 February 1899, after
traveling to Smithland, Kentucky to file it with the county clerk. On that application
he states they are "To be married at Bride's home on the -- day of February 1899",
leaving the marriage date uncertain. Apparently, their plans changed because the next
day, 7 February 1899, he and Ida were married in Carrsville "in the presence of a
few special friends, Geo. Sharp & Wright Gwartney."<a href="#5" name="top5">[5]</a>

<h4 class="ao_section">Commentary:</h4>
<div class="ao_post_just">
By 2010 Tennessee law<a href="#2" name="top2">[2]</a>, if a person dies intestate, then at the moment of
death, the title to real property vests with the decedent's heirs. A sworn Affidavit of Heirship<a href="#3" name="top3">[3]</a>
is subsequently filed with the Register of Deeds, by a person knowing facts about the heirs to the decedent, and
thereby completes the chain of title to the property. Although, this affidavit declaration was made in 1961, it is
assumed here that the 2010 law is the same in principle.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
The affidavit describes the real property which Ida had owned as "Lot 68, McLaughlin Land Company subdivision, known
as 1980 Young Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee." Since there is no record that Ida owned any other property, this is likely
the property referred to in the <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/12/treasure-chest-thursday-williams-slesser-deed.html">1921 deed</a>.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
The affidavit also helps establish the identities of the children of Ida B. Slesser. Hallie D. Slesser has been traced
from Carrsville, Kentucky to Memphis, Tennessee by <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/11/census-sunday-albert-slesser-household-1920.html">census</a>
and <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/12/ida-slesser-family-in-memphis-city-directory.html">city directory records</a>.
Her surname change to Robertson was also noted in the city directories, indicating a probable marriage sometime after 1927.
As Mrs. J. L. Robertson, she was also the <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/12/sympathy-saturday-passing-of-ida-b-slesser.html">informant to Ida's death certificate</a>.
And now this document establishes her as an heir to the property at 1980 Young Ave., Memphis, Tennessee.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
For Aimee W. Thompson, there are fewer records with only a <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/11/census-sunday-albert-h-sleiser.html">census entry in 1900 for Ama Washer</a>. However, from 1921 when
the family first appeared in the <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/12/ida-slesser-family-in-memphis-city-directory.html">city directories at 1980 Young Ave.</a>, Theodore D. Thompson was living in the household
with Ida and Hallie. Although the city directory entries beginning in 1921 do not include Aimee with Theodore,
later in 1926 they are listed together. Nevertheless, it is likely she was in the household from 1921.
Knowing she is a daughter and an heir helps clarify the close association with the Thompson family.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
Essie Gwartney, also a resident of Memphis, appears to be have been a life-long relative or friend of Ida. Given how long
they knew each other, it is likely that Essie also has roots in Livingston County, Kentucky. Ida's age at death was 73, so
Essie's claim that she knew Ida for 81 years, probably tells us Essie's age when the affidavit was declared.

Memphis city directories (in Shelby County, Tennessee), also give us a chronology of an Ida Slesser residing at 1980 Young Ave. from 1922 through 1934. Extracted directory entries for her and other family members help to show
that the Ida of Memphis, TN and the Ida of Carrsville, KY are the same person:

<div class="ao_post_just">
These directory entries provide solid evidence that Ida and Hallie are the same persons named
in the <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/11/census-sunday-albert-slesser-household-1920.html">
1900, 1910, and 1920 census</a> households in Carrsville, Livingston County, Kentucky:
<ul>
<li>The names match from both sets of records.</li>
<li>In both cases they are sharing a house.</li>
<li>Ida reports being a widow of Albert H. Slesser in 1922 and subsequent years,
and <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/11/sympathy-saturday-passing-of-albert-h-slesser.html">
Albert died in Carrsville, Kentucky, 3 Feb 1922.</a></li>
<li>Ida was a dressmaker and seamstress in Carrsville, and continues in that
occupation in Memphis.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
The first indication that Ida resumed working in Memphis is in 1924 when she reported
employment with "Sanders & Co." The 1924 city directory entry<a href="#34" name="top34">[34]</a>
describes this company as "The Progressive Clothing Club Plan Store, Men's, Women's and Children's Ready-to-Wear."
The abbreviation for Ida's position there was "ftr" possibly meaning "fitter." In 1925, Ida changes her
employment to "B. Lowenstein & Bros Inc" where she continues uninterrupted through 1934. At this large department store<a href="#35" name="top35">[35]</a> her position was seamstress.

<div class="ao_post_just">
The city directory listings for Ida refer to a single address: 1980 Young Ave., Memphis,
Shelby County, Tennessee. In 1921, the city directory lists Priestly H. Williams as the occupant
at this address. The <a href="http://along-the-ohio.blogspot.com/2014/12/treasure-chest-thursday-williams-slesser-deed.html">
1921 Shelby County deed</a> names S. H. Williams and wife as the grantors and Ida Slesser as the grantee.
Since the grantor's and 1921 occupant's surnames match, they could be related. This evidence suggests that
the 1921 deed was for the 1980 Young Ave. property.
</div>
<div class="ao_post_just">
The association of the Slesser family with Theodore and Aimee (Amy) Thompson suggests that there
is a relationship. A future post will reveal that Aimee Thompson is a daughter of Ida.

<div class="ao_post_just">
Hallie's surname change in 1930 to Robertson suggests her marriage to John L. Robertson
sometime in 1928 or 1929.

Ida would have had first hand knowledge about his occupation, so that would be primary information
but rest would be secondary. At the time of Albert's death, Ida states that her address was Carrsville, Kentucky.

The attending physician, A. A. Casper, M.D., had diagnosed Albert's illness as "chronic interstitial nephritis"
(kidney inflammation) about two weeks before his death. Dr. Casper estimated that Albert had suffered from
this condition for about one year.

The enumerator's entries for Albert in column 13, "Year of Immigration to United States" and column 14, "Naturalized or Alien"
are "Un." These questions were asked of persons who were foreign born and applied to Albert because he was reported to be born
in Germany. In the 1920 instructions to enumerators<a href="#4" name="top4">[4]</a> "Un" (for unknown) was to be recorded
as a response "if <i>after every effort</i> you can not obtain the desired information". Perhaps, Albert did not know his
citizenship status or when his parents immigrated to the United States. On the other hand, he may have been deliberately
withholding information.

<div class="ao_post_just">
In the 1900<a href="#5" name="top5">[5]</a> census, Ida had reported her occupation as "dress maker."
In 1920, she reports her occupation as "seamstress." The title of dress maker suggests a skill in making custom
clothing for women, whereas a seamstress may only operate a sewing machine to create seams or make alterations.
Perhaps to the census taker these occupational titles were synonymous. Or perhaps, the nature of her work
changed to reflect the wider adoption of ready-made wear.
